Smart locks for Dubai homes: a buyer's guide

How to pick a smart lock that fits your door, your household and your smart home, with the Philips, Aqara, Kaadas, Lockin, Orvibo and Somlock locks we supply.

The right smart lock depends more on your door than on the brand, so this guide starts with the door, then the people who use it, then the locks. Everything we name below is a lock we supply and install, and each one links to its product page.

Start with the door

Before looking at features, check what you're fitting the lock to. A five-minute look at the door rules out half the catalogue.

• Door material: wood, metal, aluminium, uPVC or glass. Glass and aluminium doors need locks made for them.
• Door thickness. Each lock has a supported range, and older villa doors sometimes fall outside it.
• The existing lock. Villas often have a mortise lock body inside the door; apartments may have a cylinder deadbolt. Some smart locks replace the whole set, others keep what is there.
• Exposure. A front door under a porch is very different from a garden gate in full sun.
• Fire rating. If it is a fire door, any change of hardware needs to keep that rating, so check with your building management first.

If you rent, or live in a building with a master key system, ask the landlord or building management before you change the lock.

Think about who comes in

A household in Dubai often includes family, domestic staff, drivers, guests and the odd maintenance visit. Different people suit different ways in:

• PIN codes work for everyone and can be limited to certain days or deleted when someone leaves.
• Fingerprints are the quickest for family members, once they're enrolled.
• Face recognition and palm vein readers are touchless, which helps when your hands are full of shopping.
• Cards and fobs suit staff entrances and offices.
• The app lets you open the door remotely and see who came in and when.
• A mechanical key or emergency power port is the fallback when batteries run flat.

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Zigbee or Thread

How the lock connects decides what it can do from outside the house and how it fits with the rest of your system.

• Bluetooth locks talk to your phone when you're near the door. Remote access usually needs a hub or gateway.
• Wi-Fi locks connect straight to your router for remote access and alerts. They use more battery, and they need decent Wi-Fi at the front door, which isn't a given in a concrete villa.
• Zigbee locks join a smart home hub, which makes them the easiest to tie into scenes such as "arriving home".
• Thread and Matter locks work across Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa, and some support Apple Home Key on an iPhone or Apple Watch.

The locks we supply, by situation

Villa front doors

For a main entrance where you want several ways in, look at the Philips face recognition locks: the Philips DDL709-FVP, DDL702-FVP and 720 FVP. The Philips DDL720-MVP reads palm veins instead of faces, and the Philips DDL902 combines palm vein, face and fingerprint with PIN and key backup.

The Kaadas K20 Pro Max is a mortise lock with face recognition, fingerprint and a built-in video doorbell with a screen on the inside. The Orvibo V5 pairs face recognition with a 3D fingerprint sensor and works in the Orvibo Home app.

A lock that is also a door viewer

If you want to see who's outside before opening, the Philips Alpha-VP-5HWS (for wooden doors) and the Philips DDL303-VP-5HWS combine the lock, doorbell and a camera viewer in one unit. That saves a separate doorbell on an apartment door.

Apartments and straightforward fingerprint locks

For a simpler fingerprint and PIN lock, look at the Philips DDL 240X-1HB, Philips DDL210S-1H, Lockin X9 and Lockin S30 Pro. The S30 Pro is listed for wooden, security and fireproof doors from 40 to 120mm thick. The Orvibo C1 connects over Wi-Fi without a separate gateway, and the Aqara U50 is a Bluetooth option.

If the lock is part of a smart home

Aqara locks are the easiest to fold into automations. The Aqara A100, U300 and D100 run on Zigbee through an Aqara hub and work with Apple HomeKit. The Aqara U200 and D200i use Thread and Matter and support Apple Home Key. If you want to keep your existing deadbolt, the Aqara U100 is a retrofit lock that fits over it.

Gates and exposed doors

Garden gates and doors in direct sun need a lock built for it. The Philips 611-1HBS (dual-sided, for gates), Philips 611-5HBS and Philips DDL 505-5HBS are all rated IP66. For aluminium doors, the Philips DDL801-5HBS is made for that profile.

Glass doors

Frameless glass doors are common in offices and some villas. The Kaadas R8L is a standalone glass door deadbolt with fingerprint, PIN and card entry. Our own Home AI Smart Glass Door Lock adds face recognition and Wi-Fi app control.

Cabinets, lockers and staff areas

For cabinets, lockers and storage, Somlock Mini K10 locks open by PIN, the K10M by Mifare card, and the K10B is managed online, which suits facility managers looking after many lockers.

What to check for Dubai conditions

Heat is the first thing. Check the operating temperature and IP rating if the outside panel faces the sun, and choose an outdoor-rated model for gates. Batteries are the second: most locks run for months on AA batteries or a rechargeable pack, send low-battery warnings, and have a USB port or key for emergencies. Make sure everyone in the house knows where the backup key is kept.

On security, buy a lock with more than one way in, change any default codes, delete codes when staff leave, and keep the app and firmware updated. A well-made lock fitted properly matters more than a long feature list.

Fitting and pricing

Retrofit locks such as the Aqara U100 are fairly simple to fit. Mortise replacements, glass doors, gates and anything joining a smart home hub are better fitted by an installer, because alignment and door preparation decide how well the lock works over time.
