Home theatre setup in Dubai: how to choose the right installer

What a home theatre installer should do before, during and after the install, and the questions that separate a specialist from someone who mounts TVs.

Anyone can sell you a projector and a box of speakers. The difference between a room that sounds right and one that doesn't comes from the work around the equipment: where the speakers go, how the room is treated, how the system is calibrated and how easy it is to use afterwards. That is what you are really choosing when you pick an installer.

What the installer should do before selling you anything

A good company starts with the room and how you plan to use it. Expect a site visit where they measure the space, look at the shape, windows and doors, check how much daylight gets in and listen for noise from the AC and outside. In Dubai the AC is often the loudest thing in a quiet room, so a good installer will ask where the fan coil or duct outlets are.

They should also ask what you watch and who watches it. A family that mostly streams films and football needs a different system from someone who listens critically to music. Seating positions, screen size and viewing distance all follow from those answers.

The design that comes out of this should cover:

• screen or TV size and placement, and projector position if there is one
• speaker layout for your seats, including Dolby Atmos height channels if you want them
• acoustic treatment, if the room needs it
• where the equipment rack lives and how it is ventilated
• cable routes, power and network points
• lighting and how the whole room is controlled

What installation and handover include

On site, the work usually runs in this order: cabling and back boxes, screen and projector or TV mounting, in-wall or in-ceiling speakers, acoustic panels, then the rack. After that comes the part people underestimate. Audio calibration with a measurement microphone sets levels, distances, crossovers and room correction for your seats. Video calibration sets the picture for your room's light. Then the control system is programmed so one button starts a film, dims the lights and closes the curtains.

How to tell a specialist from a generalist

Plenty of companies install a TV and a soundbar. Fewer can design a dedicated room. Some signs you are talking to the right people:

• they ask about the room and how you use it before they talk about brands
• they can show you finished rooms in Dubai similar in size and scope to yours
• they talk about calibration and can explain how they do it
• their proposal is itemised, with equipment, labour and materials listed separately
• they are open about which brands they work with and why

Industry training helps too. CEDIA is the main trade association for residential AV, and some calibrators train to ISF or THX methods. Ask what training the people actually working in your room have had.

Questions to ask before you sign

About their experience:

• Can I see or visit a room you have done that is similar to mine?
• Who on your team designs the system, and who calibrates it?

About the design:

• Will you measure the room and show me the layout before I commit?
• How will you deal with AC noise and daylight?
• How do you handle changes once work has started?

About equipment and support:

• Which brands do you recommend for this room, and could you work with a brand I prefer?
• What warranty comes with each piece of equipment?
• How do I get help after handover, and is there a check-up once I have used the room for a few weeks?

A cinema room is much easier to get right on drawings than after handover. Bring the AV designer in before ceilings and joinery are fixed so speaker positions, screen wall, rack ventilation, conduit and AC outlet positions can be agreed with the MEP and interior teams.
